چکیده

The molecular species compositions of phosphatidylcholine, -ethanolamine, -serine, and -inositol in microsomes and rod outer segments from bovine retina were studied by means of argentation thin-layer chromatography (TLC) after conversion of the phospholipids to labeled acetyldiacylglycerols. A highly unsaturated group of molecular species, called "supraenes" to indicate the presence of more than six double bonds per molecule, was present in all four glycerophospholipids. Docosahexaenoic acid was the major component of these species, in combination with other unsaturated fatty acids, predominantly polyunsaturates. The presence of species containing docosahexaenoate in both positions of the glycerol backbone was suggested by the high percentage (95%) of these fatty acids in the most polar fraction of phosphatidylcholine. In rod outer segments, supraenes were the major component of phosphatidylserine (51% of the molecular species), followed by phosphatidylcholine (31%), phosphatidylethanolamine (21%), and phosphatidylinositol (9%). Hexaenes, which contained docosahexaenoate and saturated fatty acids, predominated in phosphatidylethanolamine (67%), followed by phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylcholine (about 36%), and phosphatidylinositol (12%). Tetraenes made up half the phosphatidylinositols, but amounted to less than 5% of the other glycerophospholipids. Disaturated and monoenoic species made up 14 and 6%, respectively, of phosphatidylcholine. In microsomes, there was less of the docosahexaenoate-containing species and more of the saturated to tetraenoic species. Monoenes predominated in phosphatidylcholine (35%), tetraenes in phosphatidylinositol (71%), and hexaenes in phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylserine (50 and 42%). Supraenes amounted to less than 15% of each of the four glycerophospholipids in microsomes.-Aveldaño, M. I., and N. G. Bazán. Biosynthesis of molecular species of inositol, choline, serine, and ethanolamine glycerophospholipids in the bovine retina.

The distribution of radioactivity among molecular species of inositol, choline, serine, and ethanolamine glycerophospholipids was studied in whole bovine retinas and in microsomes from retinas incubated with [3H]glycerol, [3H]inositol, or [3H]serine, in the presence and absence of propranolol. Most of the labeled glycerol was incorporated into docosahexaenoate-containing molecular species (hexa...

Phospholipid biosynthesis in the oyster protozoan parasite, Perkinsus marinus.

Perkinsus marinus is a protozoan parasite that causes high mortality in its commercially and ecologically important host, the Eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica. In order to understand the host-parasite relationship in lipid metabolism, the ability of P. marinus to synthesize phospholipids from polar headgroup precursors was investigated. Pulse/chase experiments were conducted using radiolabl...

Presence of base-exchange activity in rat brain nerve endings: dependence on soluble substrate concentrations and effect of cations.

The calcium-dependent, energy-independent incorporations of 14C-labeled bases, choline, ethanolamine, and serine, into their corresponding membrane phospholipids, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and phosphatidylserine, were compared in microsomes and in subcellular fractions prepared from a lysed crude mitochondrial (P2) pellet of whole rat brain. When activities were measured in...

Arabidopsis Serine Decarboxylase Mutants Implicate the Roles of Ethanolamine in Plant Growth and Development

Ethanolamine is important for synthesis of choline, phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylcholine (PC) in plants. The latter two phospholipids are the major phospholipids in eukaryotic membranes. In plants, ethanolamine is mainly synthesized directly from serine by serine decarboxylase. Serine decarboxylase is unique to plants and was previously shown to have highly specific activity to...

Comparative Retina Stratification in Embryos, Larvae and Adults of Alburnus chalcoides

The present investigation considered retina structure in embryos, larvae and adult Alburnus chalcoides. Histological samples of retina were provided from adult fish, different stages of embryonic and larval development. Eye primordia formed from ectoderm at 16 hours after fertilization (16hAF) and then developed to eye cups. Initial eye cup which contained undifferentiated retina began to form ...
